2014-9

Sometimes the editorial copy for one of our magazine issues takes on a life of its own — such was the case this month. A nchored by a cover story about the often-overlooked sport of rowing, gloriously photographed by rower Allison Potter, are two stories of senior Americans who remember life at the beach during an era so very different from today. First, memories of “Big Daddy” Jim Wallace, who will be 98 September 3, beautifully written by a Wallace grand-daughter, Carrie Davis Conway. Wallace’s memories are living history. Then the story of three sisters, aged 88 to 93, Polly McIlvoy, Nina Keeley and Myrtle Lindsay and their memories of 85 years of summers at the beach, is also touchingly captured by a granddaughter, Jamie Penn. Added to these is a story that has captivated several of us, of Confederate sympathizer and spy Rose O’Neale Greenhow by Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr. Beautiful and alluring in life, and the story of her death, and the gold she was carrying on her person when she drowned attempting to flea capture, is still riveting 150 years later. We also checked in this month with the unsinkable Beth Quinn, in her undaunted battle with stage IV ovarian cancer. We first featured Beth and her daughters in our April 2014 issue, “The World According to Queen B.” Five months later, Beth is still handling her treatment with a great deal of grit and humor. Sometimes our food spreads wow even us, and this month is no exception. With so many eating at the workplace, on the 10 WBM september 2014 go, or at school, we asked Wilmington’s food experts to help us pack a variety of lunches, photographed with an eco-friendly selection of trendy new gear to carry it in style. Come with us as we think outside the lunchbox. As we embark on the final quarter of 2014, get out and enjoy the spectacular beauty of our coast. up front Editor/Publisher PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLISON POTTER Pat Bradford at the restored 1700s gate at the Airlie entrance. Airlie Gardens is the quintessential location for photography; and, with the rehanging of its refurbished handmade, ornamental wrought-iron gate, one more spot on the grounds has been added for a great picture backdrop. See “Hammer & Fire” in the April 2014 issue of WBM for the story of Ben Kastner’s great restoration of this stunning masterpiece. Pat’s hair by Frank Potter, Bangz Hair Salon.
