Letters to the Editor

2014-6

12 WBM letters to the editor Macey WBM MAY 2014 I am writing to say how much I enjoyed “Macey” in your recent issue. What a charming story — and full of those things that are such a part of a Wrightsville Beach summer: family, the natural world, and memories made. Thank you and Marietta Gwathmey for sharing this story with us all. — Angela Rowe I sat several weeks ago on a Friday evening to study the Wrightsville Beach Magazine, as I do monthly, and was very excited to see that your May issue had a story written by my friend Marietta Gwathmey about her family’s rehabilitation efforts with a near-dead seagull, Macey. This sweet tale of her son, William, and his family, friends, and community was so touching. The way the tale is told I felt like I was present with this family and this sick gull every step of the way, and I was along for the heartwarming ride. Having children about the ages of the ones in the story, I can relate to tender feelings and “six eyes looking at me” for help when a wounded or needy animal (or person) needs us. I felt like I was right there, cheering every step of the way, shedding tears of joy as Macey rehabilitated and recovered, and ultimately flew on, back to health and life as a seagull. And I must add that I’ve had the same reaction the three times I’ve read it! Frank and Marietta Gwathmey are wonderful youth leaders in our church, and I am grateful they shared this story with you, and that you shared it with us. Love does conquer all! — Dawn Brinkley Carter I enjoyed so much reading the wonderful story about Macey in this month’s WBM. It brought back so many wonderful childhood memories of growing up on the south end of Wrightsville Beach. I remember Macey and many, many more similar stories of exploring in the marsh, fishing, crabbing, sailing and water skiing with William and all of our summertime friends. Our parents had a wonderful rule....NO TVs AT THE BEACH; therefore, we played all day, every day together going on adventures, just as Marietta described, and when it rained, we learned every card game there was and put together every puzzle we could find. Now, 25 years later, all of those children still remain close friends thanks to all of those wonderful summers we spent together. Thanks for running such a great article. — Lillian Teer Hillsborough WBM MAY 2014 Truly beautiful. Wow. Thank you. — Laurie Paolicelli, Executive Director Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau The May issue is WONDERFUL! Congratulations! You knocked it out of the proverbial ballpark and then some! And not only that, but had I known it was your birthday during your visit, I might have even sung! <grin> Really, truly, the May issue is just GREAT! Thank you again so much for visiting the museum and even asking me to write an article, too! I anticipate you will get lots of positive reaction both in the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area and also here in the Hillsborough area, too! Kudos! The whole magazine (and not just this issue, but other issues I’ve seen) is beautiful, entertaining, and thought provoking. You make the difficult look easy, and, that’s much harder than it looks! One word sums up the May Issue: WOW! Celebrations are in order! — Scotty Washington Wow! What a great piece. Thanks so much for all of your team’s efforts, very nicely done. Thanks again. — Eric Gephart Men in Business WBM MAY 2014 My wife loved the ad. Your publication looks great.
